If we want to be specific we have to qualify it.&nbsp; Greek has at least 7 words for love. Our passage from John\u2019s Gospel uses two of these: agape and philia. Agape is unconditional, sacrificial love. Philia is the affectionate love of friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Jesus asks Peter the first time if he loves him he says \u2018agapas me?\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter replies, you know that I love you (philo se).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus asks Peter a second time \u2018agapas me?\u2019 and he replies \u2018philo se\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the third time a shift has occurred. Jesus says \u2018phileis me?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Peter replies \u2018philo se\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s that simple. Jesus has come to Peter\u2019s level. Jesus meets Peter where he is and doesn\u2019t demand a type of love that he isn\u2019t able to give.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Gospel challenges me to make space for others. It challenges me to remember that you can\u2019t demand love from another.
